Some houses are nice. And there there are homes like these — the ones we live for. Even if you don’t love modern homes, you have to appreciate the clean lines and elegant design to this home. Add in a Huntington Harbor location and you can see why it’s priced where it is.
Architecturally, this home reminds me of so many different tracts and architects. On one hand, it feels like an extraordinarily detailed version of a design from the Sol Vista tract — also in Huntington Beach. But I feel like that sells the design short. There are also elements of Edward Killingsworth here (especially the way the rooms connect together and the emphasis on horizontal planes) as well as William Krisel — I can’t help but think of his Kings Point subdivision in Palm Springs.
What is also amazing to me is how well this home is preserved, but it doesn’t appear antiquated or dated. Good design looks nice. Great design looks nice forever. This home has that elusive quality of timelessness. That isn’t to say there aren’t things we’d change. But this is a house you tweak — one you make subtle changes to. This might even be the kind of house you do mockups and stare at for weeks before you make a change.
$1.2M for an off-water home in Huntington Harbor of 2400 square feet might seem a little steep — but this is a situation where you have to ask yourself about alternatives. Much smaller Eichlers are located inland and rapidly approaching $1M. At the other end, it seems anything modern (that isn’t a disaster) in Corona del Mar and Newport is in the $1.5M neighborhood. This home is a great in-betweener.
