We like surprises — like finding a cool Spanish Contemporary home in San Juan Capistrano that melds modern clean lines with a city-contextual Spanish vibe. So many people are afraid to step outside the box and do something different. And that’s too bad, because almost all of the unique and awesome architectural designs that have stood the test of time were unconventional and sometimes even unloved at their introductions.
I think what catches my eye with this home is that it fits. San Juan Capistrano hosts one of the early California missions and represents one of the first European settlements in California. As such, there is a lot of history. To this day a large rodeo is held every year and the town celebrates a fun and quirky holiday called “Hoos’Gow Day” where city slickers (those who aren’t in Western attire) can be roped up and jailed (requiring a small donation to get out). But I digress (Hoos’Gow Day is coming up, March 11th), my bigger point is that San Juan Capistrano is not a town where a slick steel and glass home would necessarily fit the landscape. What I love is that this home does. It’s a modern, 21st century interpretation, but still gives a healthy Old West nod with native planters, bright white stucco, and colorful interior furnishings.
And speaking of the house itself, it’s a unique design with clean lines and broad open spaces. The asymmetry of the living room with the window and fireplace speaks more to a modern flavor than Spanish Colonialism. And the extensive use of concrete moderns things up nicely. The lot is about 10,000 square feet — large by even South Orange County standards. I feel like this home is almost there. The tile flooring feels a bit dated and I’m not sure about the kitchen, but the rest of it is a uniquely Spanish interpretation of modern design ideals. We dig it.
