Introducing The Solar Living House – UFL Solar Decathlon Team

Solar_Living_House_HeaderWe have been following the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon now for the past few competitions. It is phenomenal collaboration of young minds who are challenging themselves to create affordable, appealing designs that include optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. Student groups competing must design, build, and operate the homes. This in turn creates an unparalleled training to help launch them into the clean-energy workforce once they graduate.

There are three Decathlons worldwide: the Solar Decathlon Europe, Solar Decathlon China, and the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon held locally to us at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. So why are we so excited to feature the team of Florida students and their Solar Living House in this coming decathlon? Their project is based on concepts that are right up our alley! Take a look at some of these key elements of their mission with the project:SolarLivingMission2
The team from the University of Florida’s School of Architecture contacted us just a few weeks ago. Once they began collecting data and researching ideas for their concept they continued to be drawn to the Case Study Homes of the Mid-Century. They were planning a trip out to Orange County with a goal of visiting some of our local Eichler homes. We were of course thrilled to hear about their interest in the Mid-Century Case Study Program and truly enjoyed showing them these local landmarks and all they offer. SolarLivingMission3
We are confident they will do just that! Our next post will give you some more details on the design concept itself and how they are including ideas inspired by the Case Study Houses.SolarLivingMission1
This is one of the overall goals of every team competing. It is also another reason why we see a great deal of value for these students and schools to invest their time in this decathlon. It is with the future in mind. That doesn’t mean the Solar Living House team isn’t looking behind them for inspiration as well.
“We want to assure that we are looking back in order to look forward, synthesizing the clean lines, efficient spaces and material palettes of the Case Study program with the efficacy of new envelope strategies, energy-productive systems, and fabrication methods.” -Solar Living House 01 Team
