The Habitat for Humanity OC ReStore thrift shops are treasure troves for great, functional home goods. Every time I stop by to browse I notice a good collection of unique, retro pieces. I enjoy picking out mid-century modern gems sprinkled throughout the store. On a recent trip I found an abundance of MCM inspired pieces that I just had to share.
Cruising through the furniture section I spotted a gorgeous mid-century modern vanity. This piece may even be circa the mid-1900s by the looks of it. I figured that if the future owner set about sanding it down and applying a nice mineral oil, it would become a standout piece. The hardware looks new enough but just imagine the vanity with bronze bar handles – divine. The piece features a hole in the front for installing a lock for the 2 centered doors. This item was priced at $15 when I stopped by.
Right in front of that painted vanity was a set of late mid-century modern inspired desk chairs. These chairs may not be the epitome of MCM design but their subtle retro look means that they would fit in with other styles of furniture without much of a fight. The upholstery was in great condition, too, and at $5 a pop you just can’t go wrong.
OC ReStore Anaheim always has such a great selection of light fixtures. I am always blown away by all the beautiful pieces available. In particular their collection of mid-century modern style lighting is impressive. There were too many examples to note here but here’s overview. I found a set of gorgeous $15 indoor-outdoor minimalist modern sconce light fixtures. If you’re in the market for pendant lights, there is a great selection of glass and stone MCM-inspired pendants with metal accents from around $20 each. Lastly, I spotted a stack of boxed large MCM oval ceiling light fixtures at just $49 each.
Some advice to anyone engaging in a remodel: always visit the ReStore when searching for renovation materials. They have a lot to offer, from windows to doors, flooring to decorative tile and so much more. Many of these materials can easily blend in with an MCM design. For example, I found these dazzling turquoise tiles that would easily match a mid-century style project.
For an easy, big impact redesign project, consider swapping out your furniture handles for some MCM-inspired handles. The Anaheim ReStore always seems to have a nice selection of handles at just a few bucks each – plenty of them boasting MCM style. So go on and grab some. Your dresser will thank you.
Finally, I spotted a perfect example of the décor gems you can find at OC ReStore shops. This picture of Atomic Era children at play captures the nostalgia of the period at just $5.
