Pushing the boundaries of what a Cliff May is…

I think at some point you have to ask the question, is it still a Cliff May home? I’ll save you the trouble, in this case I think it is. And I’m going to tell you why. People do all kinds of renovations / modification / reimagining in the Ranchos. Some of it wonderful. Some of it okay. And some it just plain awful. I don’t judge a home like this based on whether or not it is original (okay, maybe I do a little bit). I don’t even judge it based on whether I think, if alive today, would Cliff May have done something similar. Rather, I look at whether the modifications make the house work better as a house (something Cliff May was VERY interested in, btw) AND wonder whether this furthers the idea that the Cliff May homes were meant to represent. These homes were about indoor-outdoor living and clean, modern style where everything has a purpose. The windows aren’t original, and neither is the stucco exterior. But I this home is also easier to maintain and has been expanded for modern convenience.
