It’s that special time of year; near and dear to all Mid-Century Modern design enthusiasts’ hearts in Southern California and beyond. We’re talking about Modernism Week in Palm Springs, and it’s going on right now!
Modernism Week – Brief Background
The event started back in February 2006 after the success of Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale and the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Council annual symposium. A collection of inspired local design and architecture experts came together to organize the first Modernism Week, in which everything Mid-Century Modern from historical buildings to the retro cars of Palm Springs were put on display and discussed.
Now, the annual summit features more than 250 individual events including the Modernism Show & Sale, Signature Home Tours, Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, films, lectures, nightly parties, live music, walking/bike tours, garden tours, various exhibits, vintage car shows, and much, much more. Modernism Week is all about celebrating the aesthetic and history of Mid-Century Modern architecture, design, culture, art and fashion.
The acclaimed and oh-so fun Double Decker Bus Tours run daily in a variety of locations. The signature Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour is a must for those new to Modernism Week.
The atomic era was big on the cocktail, whether it was a Sidecar or shrimp. Get in the spirit at any one of the many cocktail parties going on. One that sounds too good to miss is “Cocktails at Tiffany’s” hosted by Kelly Golightly and Fred Baby at The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House. Golightly’s house, Villa Golightly, will be renovated by celebrity tastemakers in the style of Audrey Hepburn and on display during the soiree, which will be a recreation of the famed Breakfast at Tiffany’s party scene, with martinis of course!
For a quirky, truly unique experience consider the Sunny Cycle Electric Bike Neighborhood Tour. First off, it’s not what you think. Picture this, you’re on a trolley car that features a bar in the center surrounded by 10 bar chairs with bike pedals instead of foot rests. You pedal with the others while touring the town, learning about Modernist landmarks and local lore. You’re served appetizers and drinks in red cups at stopping points. How fun does that sound? Sunny Cycle Electric Bike Neighborhood Tours are available daily.

Eichler in Palm Springs?
Going along with the theme of MCM in the Coachella Valley, did you know that you can get into a brand new Eichler in Palm Springs? It’s true and they’re built to the standard of living you’d expect in new construction. The Desert Eichler by KUD Properties Inc. consists of 3 phases of authentic Eichler designed homes. The building plans are licensed from the architectural firms that hold the original plans and receive a certificate of authenticity from the associated firm.
The first Desert Eichler had its debut at Modernism Week 2015. These homes boast the modern conveniences and features you would expect in a brand new home, including dual pane windows, insulated foam roofs, efficient central cooling and heating, prewiring for smart home systems, appliance upgrade options and more. They include all the expected Eichler touches as well such as an atrium, clerestory windows, glass walls, post and beam ceilings and much more. It’s the best of old and new!
Modernism Week is more than just a yearly event! It is in fact a non-profit organization, since 2009, which helps fund local and state groups and organizations focused on the preservation of modernist architecture throughout California. Modernism Week also provides scholarships to students pursuing careers in architecture and design.
