It’s hard to pass up a good burger. It’s even harder to ignore a menu full of great ones.
At Pie Dog in Fullerton, it’s a case of the latter.
The relatively new gourmet steak burger and sausage restaurant sits at the ground level of a massive apartment building on the fringe of Downtown Fullerton.
Inside, customers are greeted by a classic Street Fighter arcade machine to the right, a small bar to the front and a several rows of communal seats to the left. There is also additional seating in the back of the restaurant. Despite occupying a somewhat small space, the intimate size of the restaurant matches the fun, hip vibe it seems to be going for quite well.
Typically, if you decide to sit at the bar, you’ll be in the company of co-owner Donny Gaudiano, whose easy going personality and humorous take on the menu coincide perfectly with the delicious food and great drinks his kitchen serves.
The main portion of the menu, full of humorous puns and cultural references, offers a selection of five steak burgers and four hand crafted sausages made in house. Every burger is flame broiled and made to order from a daily blend of super lean sirloin and rib eye.
According to Gaudiano, the most popular burgers are the Team America ($10) and Blazing Saddles ($9) burgers. The Team America burger comes with cheddar, BBQ sauce, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion between two homemade soft buns. The Blazing Saddles Burger includes feta cheese, three amigos hot sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion and a special creamy garlic sauce. Fries are not included with each burger.
If you have a friend in the group that is vegetarian or a little more health conscious, there are alternatives such as the “Brontosaurus” veggie patty and the option to lettuce wrap the burger to resolve those problems.
As for the hand-crafted sausages made inside the restaurant, the most popular options are the “Pie Dog” (house sausage patty; $8) and “Monica Belluci” (hot Italian sausage; $8). All linked sausages are served on a soft roll with sauteed peppers and onions or sauerkraut. Additional toppings are offered for $1 each.
Beyond the main options of burgers or sausage, Pie Dog also serves appetizers such as chicken wings, onion rings, tater tots and “Franch Fries.” Surprisingly, the tater tots (garlic or parmesan; $4) have been the most popular appetizers on the menu.
Arguably Pie Dog’s other biggest attraction besides its burgers, is the rotating selection of more than 20 craft beers ($6) it offers. You can also try a “Beer Flight” sampling of any four beers on the menu for $12. During the week, customers can enjoy a happy hour discount on any of the craft beers ($4.50).
While the pricing of Pie Dog is a bit on the expensive side, there are a few deals for those with a tight budget. Students with a valid ID can get two regular “Hop Dogs” and a fountain soda for just $6. Although not on the menu, Pie Dog also has a special “GI Joe combo” that includes a cheeseburger, half order of fries and a soda for $10.
Plenty of free parking is available inside the apartment structure where Pie Dog is located. You are allowed to park in any spot that is designated “retail” or “visitor.”
