More Awesomeness In An Unlikely Place

When people think of awesome mid-century modern architecture in Orange County they think of…The Eichlers, beautiful custom homes in North Tustin, the Niguel West tract in Laguna Niguel maybe…but I can tell you they rarely mention Lake Forest, which is a total bummer. Conceived in the late 1960s, the developers of Lake Forest let some of the homebuilders run wild. And one of those builders was the Deane Brothers — a company with a penchant for some cool designs we’ve seen around Orange County. And here is one of my favorite models. You can look at the pictures, but I just have to point out one of my favorite architectural features that I’ve ever seen in a tract home. In the main living areas there is a wall that appears to be an art wall with a light on it. Cool, but not that special. But then you walk up to, look up, and realize there’s no hidden fluorescent light — up above and hidden is a long, thin, recessed skylight that bathes the wall in natural light. And the color and tone of the light changes throughout the day with the angle of the sun. So your favorite artwork actually looks different at different times of the day. Awesomeness.
