Coolest Stairs EVAR!
September 4th, 2013
This Mod Home has a ton of things going for it…and I’m definitely going to tell you about them. But first…check out the stairs! Okay, it’s out of my system. This home is located in the Belmont Shores area of Long Beach. It’s a great neighborhood if you like: nice neighborhoods, walkability, easy access to LA AND OC, good schools, fun and trendy places to live. Unfortunately, one thing Belmont Shores is not known for is mid-century modern architecture, making this property rare indeed.
A faithful reader asked me what price is the cutoff for calling something a “dream” home. Well, it’s not that simple; in fact, it’s a lot more complicated. A dream home isn’t just about the architecture, it’s really about the whole package and idea of a completely awesome lifestyle enabled by that particular property. In this case, it’s an amazing home in an equally amazing location. The ocean-close geography means cool summer evenings and even though the lot may be small, it incorporates some great outdoor space and this is one of the few times that a two-story layout really comes in handy with space efficiency. Finally, all of the Shore is your backyard!
Stylistically, this home is particularly interesting. Per the listing agent, it was originally built in the 1920s, but completely rebuilt / renovated in the 1960s. More recently it has also been the subject of the kind of renovations I would do in my own home — a very careful amalgamation of keeping the vintage features I love and introducing complimentary finishes that acknowledge we’re living in 2013. A great example of this is in the outdoor spaces. A great guiding principal I use when considering more contemporary items is: “Would the original architect have used this material or product had it been available?” Most mid-century modern architects and designers were experimenters. They weren’t afraid to try new things and buck the traditional. I like to keep that spirit alive.
