This is a post for the crazy ones, the odd balls, and the ones who don’t fit in. I’m talking about houses, of course! This home caught my eye from the first picture. But it’s when you dive-in that you realize what an awesome opportunity this is. It’s located within walking distance of Main St and a short bike ride to Pacific City (haven’t been there yet? You have to try the fish tacos at Simmzy’s). Oh yeah, and there’s an ocean view from the balcony off the master bedroom and the whole kit and caboodle is located just 2 blocks off PCH. It’s workable square footage, too.
So let’s talk about the gigantic, angular, wood-toned elephant in the room: This house isn’t exactly living up to its aesthetic potential. Sadly, it looks to be in great, well-maintained shape — but it needs a makeover. On these kinds of homes I like to start with the positives: Good layout, the shape is very striking, and it has super cool ceilings downstairs. Let’s keep those and work with them. What this house needs is a rethink on the details, colors, and the feel. One of the big bugaboos with contemporary homes is that they can feel cold and sterile. With the wood ceilings, I don’t see that happening. But there are some things that definitely need to be rethought. It’s too much like a cabin. The exterior could benefit from some metal work (perhaps on the railings on the balcony) and painted wood.
Moving to the interior…keep the ceilings and ditch the rest. The stairs are good, but the right railings would take the open treads from 70s-chic to post-urban cool. And that’s the right needle to thread on a home like this. You want contemporary, but still contextual with elements of the beach. A contemporary beach bungalow. At the list price, and with another $100k in work, this house could be amazing place to call home.
