Fantasy Break in San Clemente!

Fantasy Break. Lottery House. Rich Uncle Inheritance House. Whatever you call it, we all have those homes that we think of if money were no object. And this is a pretty minor lottery win: less than $2.3M. I think what I love about this house is attention to not only the aesthetic details (check out the backsplash in the kitchen) but also the functional ones.

Aesthetically, I don’t even know where to begin. Probably on a slightly negative note. I’m not in love with the facade of this house. It is isn’t bad and I’ve certainly seen much worse. But it’s obvious that some aesthetic compromises were made. And I think they were worth it. This house is large, but still leaves room for a nice backyard on a San Clemente lot. So on to the positive, I don’t think I can say enough good things about some of the design details. The glass railing stairwell is a prime example of beautiful simplicity. The aforementioned kitchen backsplash, and the gargantuan skylight above the stairs which drapes most of the first floor in light. The exterior railings and even things like the closet doors are as you would expect in a home at this price point. Everything wows and delights. Lights under the floating vanities in the master bathroom? Of course!

But just picking a catalog of nice things doesn’t really help a house work. The kitchen in this home is near the middle of the house. This is where everybody ends up. One of the things that may not be apparent from the pictures is that this home was originally constructed in the 1950s. What you see here is a very extensive renovation that really reimagines the house. As such, it makes much better use of the site than the original home — preserving the backyard but adding a lot of square footage, including the ultimate San Clemente amenity: the roof top deck. 

Before we close, I want to talk a little bit about houses like these. Even if your price range is nowhere near $2.3M, I think it can be useful to visit an open house like this. Excellence in home building can often be applied to smaller-scale, smaller-budget homes in part. Can you do everything they did here? No, but it’s a great place to get ideas.
