I’m a dreamer. Big time. And this is the stuff that dreams are made of. If you read any of our emails (and we know you do!) you’ll remember that we love homes where they get the details right and sweat the small stuff. Like what? Well, for starters the fact that this lot is just shy of 8000 square feet — in Newport that’s a good size. Secondly, you have to look at privacy. This home has it…despite being made of glass. And that’s priceless. Finally, it’s on a small street with fewer than 10 homes. These are the kinds of things you never think about when initially considering homes, but you should. 

Aesthetically, there are a few things I really love about this home. And strangely, sometimes it’s those tiny details that make the biggest difference. Take for example, the structural cable bracing. One of the challenges to building new homes homes out of glass is shear wall strength. Most of the designs from the 1950s would never be feasible today. In this home, they used structural cabling in an “X” pattern. It’s an ingenious way to meet today’s code requirements. And they took advantage of a picture window to create an indoor-outdoor planter. 

The kitchen, baths, and especially architectural windows and doors are all top-notch. The good stuff you’d install if you were designing your “forever home.” Perhaps the only fly in the ointment is the fact that this home is new construction and the home it replaced was actually pretty cool. But at least it was replaced with this beautiful home and not some passionless McMansion.
