Bada$$ Historic Laguna Home Done Right

I just love it when houses are done right. There are 1,000,000 ways to screw up a historic home. And this house avoided all of them. I’m a firm believer that people, in general, don’t like living in museums. Yes, I can appreciate a 100% accurate, historic restoration — but is that the kind of home I would want to live in? Did the original architect intend for his home — a machine for living — to soldier on unchanged forever? I say no. And this house is the perfect counterpoint to that notion.

Built in 1932, this Spanish revival is perched up on a hill, overlooking Laguna Village. It’s high enough to get a view, low enough to be walkable to the restaurants and shops that make living in Laguna worth the price. But what really sticks out to me is the revitalization of this house that strikes a near perfect balance of updating functionality while maintaining the feel, spirit, and purpose of the original design. I also like the balance between the semi-public front yard spaces (with gorgeous views) and the backyard, fully private spaces. On paper the lot is only 5445 square feet, but with the hillside dropping away out front, it feels much bigger. BTW, this is why we tell people that lot square footages are far from the end-all measurement of outdoor space. There are 10k unusable lots and 4k lots with amazing privacy. The best news, if you have a house with a smaller lot, there’s a lot you can do to maximize the utility.

Anyhow, back to why we love this one. Every room, they emphasize and kept what works (beautiful wood floors, beamed ceilings) and update for modern convenience the right way. Let’s take the kitchen. Modern appliances combined with a real cool blue color on simple full-frame cabinetry. Oh and some nice details than indicate someone was thinking about this as more than just a quick flip. Our favorites: the extensive use of handmade tiles and the copper cabinetry knobs.

This house is a stunner, and yes, it’s expensive. But this is a prime house, on prime real estate, in Laguna Beach.

Let us give you a personal tour of this amazing home.
