By 1974, the world of housing had changed. But this home is delightfully inspired by earlier designs. The homes on Naples Island are unique. It’s home to several Killingsworth masterpieces and the long, narrow, small city lots forced architects to come up with unique designs that maximized the space, let in the light, and managed to not feel so close to neighbors — not exactly an easy feat. 

Like many of the Killingsworth designs, some of the outdoor space is actually surrounded by the house itself to provide privacy and shielding. This home is not located on one of the canals, so managing views is important, and turning them inward gives the homeowner control.

Condition-wise, this home is a mixed bag. It’s seen some improvements over the years (bathroom, I’m looking at you) but the style has never been consistent. I think one of the first things I would do to this house is make it feel cohesive. Unified flooring and colors throughout. Then I would systematically remove the elements that clashed. Things like the red tile in the bathroom and funky counter tops and 90s kitchen. 

But as we like to say, you can change a lot about a house but never where it’s located and never what it was designed to be. This home yearns to be Naples Island modern and with a some right tweaks, it can happen.
